The Relationship Between Getty Museum, the Artists, and the Public Through Exhibitions

Different artists were involved in the Getty Museum, and they focused on different issues of America and the rest world in an attempt to express their views through art, exhibiting them to the public in multi-faceted ways. These works of art are very expensive, which makes the museum to be among the most guarded places around California in order to avoid any insecurity that may lead to a burglary or forgery. Nicholas Turner is one of the greatest artists in the Getty that is mainly known for his ability to tell possibilities and to define the cases of forging the paintings and other works of art. In the year 1993, before his appointment in the Museum on a position of a curator, he was examining the exhibits in the museum when he identified a forged work of art and reported it to George Goldner, the curator of the museum of that time. In addition to this, Tuner also went to an extent of suspecting who the forger was and, by the time he was employed in the museum, he identified more than five paintings that were forged, or  that were related to different Renaissance masters.

The Getty Museum is a world-class art gallery, which provides adequate hospitality and welcoming to the public during the exhibitions. This relationship between the establishment and the public gives the museum a high rank, which contributes to the large number of visitors. The museum attendants and workers ensure that the public and the visitors are given all the necessary information, which they need to know about certain issues and factors, regarding the various exhibits, available in the museum. This is to the best benefit of the visitors, especially those, who are conducting researches about certain issues of the past. The students also get advantages from the information, provided in the library, as a slight mistake in data may distort their understanding of certain basics that may be problematic in the process of their learning.

The relationship between the artists in the museum and their various works of art is clearly presented to the public through the exhibitions, so that the individuals, who visit the museum, are as well connected to the original artists. This is done through the interpretation of the art details by the public. This kind of relationships is dependent on the three parties, the museum, the artists, and the public, whereby without the complete participation of all members, the structure will be almost useless, as each party is essential for the normal functioning of the museum process. The museum without artists would result in the lack of exhibitions, available for the public viewing, while both the museum and the artists without the public will face the meaninglessness of the paintings and sculptures, so that the whole point of expressing ideas through the art will be distorted. Therefore, there is a tight interdependence of these three factors, which provide the existence of the museum, the expression of the artists, and, most importantly, the acquiring of information by the public.

The Difference of Getty from the Other Museums

Getty Museum is considered to be different from many other museums not only in the United States but all over the world. Getty is established as a personal property, while at the same time it is meant to serve the public, as a place, where individuals can meet and socialize, while learning and discovering more information about the artifacts and the culture. Among many other reasons, this is the key factor that makes Getty Museum attractive to many visitors, whose number is estimated to be around 1.3 million annually. Comparing to other museums the number is estimated to be twice bigger, and, according to the recent studies, it continues to increase, as the museum focuses on changing various sectors and alters the way of doing particular things in order to ensure that a target of 2 million visitors per year is reached. Due to the statistics and the information about the museum, visitors come here not only as ordinary individuals, but also with an aim to conduct researches about the museum, which are later used in other places, mainly in the local museums and in small towns in other parts of the world.

Getty Museum is located at a strategic point on the top of a hill in the Santa Monica Mountains. It creates an attractive view of all the nearby places, apart from the views in the museum. It includes the Pacific Ocean, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the Los Angeles’s landscape. Due to the inspiration from these elements, researchers suggest that visitors complement the complex of nature and culture, which is created in the museum, highlighting the necessity for other visitors to come here. This is the feature, which is not experienced in any other museum in the world and, thus, it makes the Getty to be the outstanding one.

The facility is also modernized with high-class technology, which makes it much fancier and adorable.  From the south side of it, the museum appears to grow from the hillside, equipped with two computer operated trams for the elevation of the visitors from the street level to the hilltop, All the way up visitors can enjoy a fascinating view. The construction of the museum allows easy movement in and out of the building, while at the same time still enables to view the various exhibits inside the building. There is a clearly visible distinction between the inside and the outside space, which allows the visitors to define their current position easily, therefore, regardless of the fact how big the museum is, individuals cannot be lost during the walks all around the facility. Moreover, the museum has a gorgeous and beautiful design of its architecture and the overall design of the interior, which creates a luxurious and comfortable environment to the visitors. Due to these reasons many museums both in America and the rest part of the world are considered to look not exactly like museums.

The Disadvantages of Getty Museum

Despite the difference in the state of the museum and the high value, on which this difference is based, the museum faces some challenges, considered as disadvantageous to the facility. They include the location, in which it is situated. Despite the great view and the atmosphere it provides, the property is located in a private region, which means that the distance from the main land to the facility is long enough for the visitors. According to their views and claims, more people could be expected to visit the museum, but the main limiting factor is the involved distance. It makes the process harder for the people, who want to visit the place just spontaneously without making plans and for the ones without their vehicles.

Another limiting issue to the museum is its antiquities collection. The tax scheme, applied during the purchase of new artifacts and while the expansion of the collection of Kouros, was considered to be fake. One more issue of the controversy concerns the proper titles of some artworks in the museum’s collection, which is also considered to be a major disadvantage to the Getty. The previously existing curator of the museum, Marion True, was accused of trafficking and arrested in Italy in the year 2005.

Conclusion

The Getty Museum is considered as one of the largest and the most visited museums all over the world due to the various unique features that it possesses. The museum is established as a private property, but at the same time it serves the public by functioning as a center for social interaction for individuals from California, other states of America as well as from other parts of the world. This is considered to be its main advantage and a unique feature, since no other public museum can offer such services. The museum, however, faces different challenges, as it was discussed by the paper and requires some improvements that will enable it to further increase the number of visitors.
